  • Using cvsup to stay up to date:
    # This file: /usr/local/etc/ports-supfile
    # To update the ports:
    # /usr/local/bin/cvsup -g -L 2 /usr/local/etc/ports-supfile
    # Required (or nearly-required) defaults
    *default release=cvs delete use-rel-suffix compress
    # Reasonable defaults
    *default base=/var/db
    *default prefix=/usr
    # What to get
    ports-all tag=.
  • Using portsnap to stay up to date: There is also a program called portsnap,, which is another good way to keep your ports tree up to date. Portsnap can be slightly more convenient, since it is part of the base system since FreeBSD 6.1 and doesn't require installing the cvsup port.
To get the ports tree for the first time:
    portsnap fetch extract

    To update the ports tree:

    portsnap fetch update
